Rice Intercollegiate Bowl (3rd Annual)

We are pleased to invite you to attend the Third Annual Rice Intercollegiate Bowl sponsored by the University of Tennessee Health Science Center. The goal of the competition is to promote interdisciplinary thinking and problem solving in health care. The Healthy Memphis Common Table will collaborate in this year's event.

 

The Rice Bowl is a competition among three teams of health professional students which attempt to solve a complex health care case. The case for this year's competition focuses on adolescent obesity and the competition will explore personal, environmental and societal factors that contribute to the high prevalence of obesity among the children and young adults of our community.

 

Each team consists of students from the various colleges of the Health Science Center. The case is divided into three parts. Teams are given the first part of the case in advance of the competition and present their answers to a live audience and a panel of judges. They are then given additional information about the case and are given a short period of time to develop their answers to a new set of questions. This process is repeated for the third part of the case. Teams are judged on their use of interdisciplinary approaches to problem solving as well as on the completeness and clarity of their responses.

 

The Rice Bowl is named in honor of Mr. Bill Rice, currently the Interim Chancellor of the Health Science Center.

 

The competition will be held on Tuesday, January 25, 2005, from 4:00 PM until approximately 5:30 PM in room A102 of the General Education Building at the corner of Madison Avenue and Dunlap Street on the Health Science Center Campus. A reception in honor of all of the participants will follow the competition.
